UNISON RESEARCH S9 Review - WHAT HI FI - February 2010

When it`s in full flow, it`s impossible not to love this amplifier.  If you can accomodate it and you can afford it, you`ll be rewarded with a breathtaking sound.

Practicalities first: this is a big unit, and heavy -50kgs, and it runs hot, so it needs ventilation and you`ll need a large stand.

It really comes into its own with acoustic instruments and well-recorded vocals... and the way the amp delivers low-level dynamic shifts and reveals masses of detail without ever erring towards the clinical that impresses most. Through the S9, vocals sound wonderfully convincing and natural...The Unison`s great strength is that it`s a very organic sounding amp. Few amplifiers combine such resolution with such a self-effacing sound. You get fine stereo imaging too, plus one of the most insightful treble performances we`ve heard. Highs are sweet and beautifully layered, producing a shimmering treble that few rivals can get close to. And the sheer quality of the S9 makes itself felt when you go back to more conventional alternatives. Compared to (our reference Bryston) the S9 shows a combination of naturalness in the midrange and treble finesse that the pre/power combo doesn`t even get close to.......It makes the Bryston sound clumsy and mechanical........

Conclusion: A sweet and seductive presentation, wonderfully revealing treble and midrange and lovely build. For all its quirks, this intoxicating integrated is superb. We can`t help but love it.  ***** FIVE STARS
